Another week, another Tom.
This week I caught up with Tom Grennan, a singer-songwriter who first came to fame as the guest vocalist on Chase & Status’s track ‘When it all goes wrong’.
‘I had just started a publishing deal. My manager just happened to be the same as Chase and Status’s, and they said we would love to write with you. So I kinda brought in a song I had, and then we wrote on it, and yea, made the song. It just happened so naturally really.’
Music hasn’t always been Tom’s passion though, up until his A-levels Tom had the ambition to become a footballer.
'I mean I think that is like any other growing up boy, I loved football. I was about to go to America to play over there, and yea I wasn’t good enough I don’t think? When I finished my a-levels and was going to uni I decided I really wanted to do music.’
For those who have not heard Tom’s music before, he describes it as a ‘very firey, soulfully kinda vibe’. His musical influences come from a range of artists:
‘When I grew up I used to listen to a lot of Grime music, and then when I started to discover music, I then listened to a range of different artists including Amy Winehouse, Ray Charles, as well as a lot of indie music including the Wombats, Two Door Cinema Club, Arctic Monkeys;
Tom has just completed his first UK tour, which was sold out at every location:
‘It’s mad. It is something that I have dreamt of doing. For people to come and see me play songs that I have written of my own and connecting with the songs is amazing. I mean sometimes I get nervous, but mostly nerves of excitement.’
For those of you who want to become more familiar with this artist, Tickets for his next tour go on sale tomorrow at 10am. He will be playing at Thekla, Bristol on the 28th September.
In the meantime check out Tom’s new video ‘Praying’ released on the 22nd March
